Dont do this! Over the years I have had my share of near disasters, mistakes and lessons learned (or not). I guess it all started back in the early seventies when the train hit my camera. I was just starting out at the time and wanted to shoot a dramatic shot of a speeding train for my portfolio. I went to the local camera store and talked them into loaning me a 20mm Nikkor wide-angle lens. I set my camera up on a tripod near the tracks, real near the tracks.As the train approached I began firing and as soon as the engine passed I had to step back. The noise and fury of a train just a few feet away hurtling by at more than fifty miles an hour was more than I could handle. I backed away about a dozen feet and watched in horror as the train sucked my camera and tripod right into it. When the train finally passed I recovered the pieces. Never did find the third leg of my tripod. You should have seen the salesman at the camera store when I poured his lens back onto the counter!A n power pack and a glass of CokeIn another example of dont do this, also involving a train, I was hired to photograph the interior of one of the huge diesel locomotive engines. The cylinders are literally large enough to climb down into. Anyway, I set the lighting up with a balcar studio power pack and three heads. I was shooting with a Hasselblad. Once I got a Polaroid looking pretty good I switched to film.After three or four exposures somehow a piece of metal dislodged from somewhere, I no longer remember how it happened, but the metal fell across my power cable, shorted it out and blew up my power pack. End of shoot! Having only three or four exposures for a large photo shoot is a little unnerving! When I got home I found my wife laying in a lounge chair and reading a book.I leaned over to kiss her hello and that one roll of film fell out of my pocket and into her glass of Coke! Yikes! I snatched the roll out and spent a sleepless night in worry until I could get the film into the lab the next day. As it turned out, the roll was wound tightly enough that, amazingly, there was no damage. The shoot turned out fine!In a more recent episode, for a stock shoot, I decided to shoot a businessman using a fire extinguisher on a computer. I set up a cubicle in my studio. On a count of three I had my model take aim and let loose with the extinguisher. By the third frame (and I was shooting as rapidly as the camera would fire) I could no longer see the model! The studio was filled with a thick cloud of yellow dust (monoammonium phosphate). We couldnt see, we couldnt shoot, we had to cancel the rest of the day. When I moved out of that studio two years later we were still finding small piles of yellow dust.In another brilliant move I embarked on a three-day stock shoot in a remote part of Mexico. I took with me a Profoto B power pack (Battery pack rated at 1200 watt seconds) and two heads. Somehow, I forgot to bring the charger! Of course, I didnt realize it until the first day of shooting. Luckily the pack was fully charged before I left and I managed to get a whole day of photography accomplished. Days two and three though were a real struggle. The shoot was primarily indoors. I shot with my Canon 1Ds MKII rating the speed at 800 and imploring my models to look natural and hold still! I had a lot of shots that just didnt work, but in the end it turned out OK. Phew!Earthquakes, empty film holders and bad synch speedsNot everything has always been my fault though. I once had to re-shoot when my film was caught in the processor during an earthquake, had an entire batch of 40 rolls of film mistakenly (this really was the labs mistake) pushed 2 stops, film shot from a helicopter no less.Other mistakes I have made over the years: Forgot the camera on an annual report shoot; Photographed the board of directors of a major corporation with empty 4x5 holders; had the wrong synch speed set when shooting a portrait of the CEO of Chevron, and showed up for a 4x5 shoot with no tripod (darned assistants!).Its been a long and exciting journey and I wouldnt trade it for anything. But it isnt over yet; it is actually getting more exciting all the time! I truly believe that this is the greatest time ever to be a photographer. I wake up excited and eager to get to work almost every morning. Who could ask for anything more than that!

Once I got a Polaroid looking pretty good I switched to film.After three or four exposures somehow a piece of metal dislodged from somewhere, I no longer remember how it happened, but the metal fell across my power cable, shorted it out and blew up my power pack. End of shoot! Having only three or four exposures for a large photo shoot is a little unnerving! When I got home I found my wife laying in a lounge chair and reading a book.I leaned over to kiss her hello and that one roll of film fell out of my pocket and into her glass of Coke! Yikes! I snatched the roll out and spent a sleepless night in worry until I could get the film into the lab the next day. As it turned out, the roll was wound tightly enough that, amazingly, there was no damage. The shoot turned out fine!In a more recent episode, for a stock shoot, I decided to shoot a businessman using a fire extinguisher on a computer. I set up a cubicle in my studio. On a count of three I had my model take aim and let loose with the extinguisher. By the third frame (and I was shooting as rapidly as the camera would fire) I could no longer see the model! The studio was filled with a thick cloud of yellow dust (monoammonium phosphate). We couldnt see, we couldnt shoot, we had to cancel the rest of the day. When I moved out of that studio two years later we were still finding small piles of yellow dust.In another brilliant move I embarked on a three-day stock shoot in a remote part of Mexico. I took with me a Profoto B power pack (Battery pack rated at 1200 watt seconds) and two heads. Somehow, I forgot to bring the charger! Of course, I didnt realize it until the first day of shooting. Luckily the pack was fully charged before I left and I managed to get a whole day of photography accomplished. Days two and three though were a real struggle. The shoot was primarily indoors. I shot with my Canon 1Ds MKII rating the speed at 800 and imploring my models to look natural and hold still! I had a lot of shots that just didnt work, but in the end it turned out OK. Phew!Earthquakes, empty film holders and bad synch speedsNot everything has always been my fault though. I once had to re-shoot when my film was caught in the processor during an earthquake, had an entire batch of 40 rolls of film mistakenly (this really was the labs mistake) pushed 2 stops, film shot from a helicopter no less.Other mistakes I have made over the years: Forgot the camera on an annual report shoot; Photographed the board of directors of a major corporation with empty 4x5 holders; had the wrong synch speed set when shooting a portrait of the CEO of Chevron, and showed up for a 4x5 shoot with no tripod (darned assistants!).Its been a long and exciting journey and I wouldnt trade it for anything. But it isnt over yet; it is actually getting more exciting all the time! I truly believe that this is the greatest time ever to be a photographer. I wake up excited and eager to get to work almost every morning. Who could ask for anything more than that!

A creaky old cassette player wheezes out some very treble gamelan music and the class begins.Only eight or nine years old the girls are already professionals. The opening of a hotel or gallery, or even a villa is always enhanced with a display of Balinese dance.Teacher Wayan Sudi learned dance years ago when it was one of the subjects taught at her school in Sukawati. She is a recognized Legong and can be seen performing this special dance at ARMA each week. She teaches young girls as a part of her sacred duty rather than for monetary returns. Anything she receives is little more than a pittance.Balis dance, like the culture, is kept alive and dynamic. Generation after generation have learned the moves and gestures of their ancestors. From an early age children are exposed to dance. Even before they can walk, they are brought to temple ceremonies where dance and the pervading music of the gamelan enters their souls. By the time they are five or even four they are ready to learn more.Behind the scenes the banjars, the community organizations make sure that beliefs and traditions of dance and music are kept alive in their village something that happens all over Bali.On the village or traditional level, dance is taught by a kind of absorption method. The girls follow their teacher time after time until the moves are considered to have entered the body and they can perform them by themselves. Then the teacher will stand behind correcting, pulling and pushing their limbs into correct postures, with the right gestures and expressions. Balinese dance is all about control and balance, integral parts of the learning process.Every limb, every muscle and every motion are held in control. Watch if you can, Nigel Simmons beguiling movie on Bali. One segment features a dancer moving almost in slow motion. The camera is in close, inches away from her, almost touching her face, but her command of her movements and senses as she performs, seemingly unaware of the intrusion, is breathtaking.The variety of dance in Bali is dazzling. It is visually spectacular, and seen in the dim light of oil lamps with three young costumed girls, and an army of men clad simply in sarungs as they chant the backing chorus of cak, cak, cak; it can really make you believe in magic.The elegant Legong is another favorite and those interested can explore ever more dances like the Rejang, the popular Gambuh and several compelling mask dances.The mountain to of Kintamani is home to the Bans Gede - a formalized warrior dance that is both stately and compelling. The sacred barong is one of the most loved of Balinese dances, which can be seen in various tourist sites in temples and around Galungan time, by teams of small boys roaming the streets with various forms of baby barong - a very heartwarming sight.Apart from this little class in my compound, dance is taught all over the island, often with a dozen of so students learning privately from a good teacher.Several hotels IikeTanjung Sari in Sanur and Amandari hold classes, as does the~well-established ARMA in Ubud. You can ask your guide to arrange a visit where you will be welcome to sit and watch the students.The culmination of Balis cultural calendar happens between mid June to late July when the Bali Festival of the Arts showcases dance and drama performances from across the island. It is a time not to be missed by any budding culture vulture. All the best and the newest, not to mention avant garde performances are highlighted. You can lose yourself in a world of dance performances. One year recently there was a kecak performance, which included classical Indian dancers from America and classical Indian singers from India. It was a cultural co-operation that really worked!While lucky visitors may get to see a performance at a temple, there are plenty of public performances for visitors who would like to experience a taste. Check your tourist guides and ask at your hotel for recent updates. In Ubud visitors may find themselves gently accosted on the streets, by men dressed in traditional clothes. Dont ignore them, as they are selling tickets for the nights performances and trying to make a little pocket money. But fear not. The shows are genuine. A weekly program will show you what is happening where.The Ubud place holds regular evening shows which is are always a pleasure to watch.In the end, the Balinese themselves love dance and their first responsibility is to please the gods.
